The first Saddle Ranch Chop House launched in 1999 on L.A.'s Sunset Strip, becoming a hit with Hollywood stars and making cameos on Sex in the City, The Bachelor, and Desperate Housewives. The downtown Scottsdale incarnation opened Jan. 12 and is already wildly popular. Saddle Ranch is one of the few places in town you can get a meal, including breakfast fare, into the wee hours. They keep serving till 2 a.m. Starting Jan. 28, they'll open at 8 a.m., serving brunch with $1.99 mimosas and Bloody Marys daily. The menu leans heavily toward the bovine - prime rib, ribs and eight types of steaks - but herbivores will find plenty of veggie fare.
Like the rest of the place, even the food is entertaining: Diners stare incredulously at the 12x 18-inch platters heaped with nachos or appetizer samplers. A birthday party shares a beehive of pink cotton candy as big as Marge Simpson's hair.b Technicolor specialty drinks-with names like Bull Fighter, Gold Rush and Arizona Sunset-are served in 32-ounce carafes.Outside on the front patio, friends feel like kids again roasting s'mores at the two fire pits. The bull-riding spectacle feels more like a fun chance to let your hair down than a macho contest or a meat market, despite the occasional split pants or peekaboo breast. If you go, don't worry about parking-valet costs just $1.50. One tip, though, for ladies considering riding the bull: You might want to rethink the little black dress.
